Recognizing the need for more comprehensive approaches to conservation in the face of continued development, Defenders of Wildlife published GETTING UP TO SPEED: A Conservationist's Guide to Wildlife and Highways (G.U.T.S.). This primer dives into the complex world of transportation planning for conservation advocates to better address potential conflicts and concerns and become better informed and effective stakeholders. This manual was published in 2007 and over the last decade things have certainly changed. Our knowledge has grown, our expertise has been refined, and we now have successes and challenges to learn from. Our tools and approaches have become more sophisticated, law and policy continue to evolve, and agency cultures shift. Recognizing this we now ask the questions: what resources do conservation advocates and other stakeholders need now to advance the use of ecological knowledge and continue to be effective partners in transportation planning and collaboration at multiple levels and scales? Do we need a G.U.T.S. 2.0? The goal of this workshop will be to gather and discuss as a community of conservationists, practitioners, planners, researchers, newcomers and veterans to have a conversation about what we need to better inform each other in the current and changing world of transportation policy & planning, road ecology and conservation priorities in a dynamic and changing environment. Our objectives will be to 1) consider current resources that are available, 2) assess the value of those resources and applicability for use at multiple scales, 3) identify deficiencies in the current catalog of resources, 4) ascertain audiences in need of various products and tools, and 5) propose ideas on how to improve, develop new and/or disseminate current resources for broader applicability and more effective use. This workshop and discussion will target the topics of innovation, collaboration, effective decision-making, adaptive management, aquatic organism passage, habitat mosaics, sustainability and planning. The result of the workshop will be a platform for engaging on future discussions and work products that will be developed ad-hoc as driven by engaged participants and the organizations they represent. To best facilitate a robust and efficient discussion, we wish to ask participants and other interested parties to complete a pre-conference survey and use the results of which to best inform our discussions in the time allotted.
