Wolf recolonization in California began December 28, 2011 with the arrival of OR-7. His wide-ranging movements gave CDFW a first taste for the ability of wolves to cover large distances quickly. Since his arrival, roughly a dozen wolves have spent time in California. Of these dozen or so animals, a few have been radio-collared, giving CDFW detailed accounts of their travels. These travels include, among other things, an ability to cover >25 km/day; which has inevitably brought some individuals in close contact with major roadways. With only a handful of wolves having ventured into and/or living in California to date, and with likely more to come in the near future, the potential for major roadways to negatively impact wolf recovery is already apparent. Understanding wolf habitat use and dispersal behavior, and acting accordingly, could help mitigate the negative impacts of major roadways on wolf recovery in California.
