In the next few years, a new stretch of highway will be built in the Bavispe River valley between the biodiverse and wild Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sierra El Tigre in Northwestern Mexico. This highway is situated within the connectivity models of jaguar, black bear, and Mexican wolf, three federally protected species in Mexico. The new highway will run 12 km through one of the Bavispe Natural Protected Area polygons, an important protected area in the US-Mexico borderlands for the above-mentioned species. Wildlands Network has been working with the construction company in charge of the project in designing and locating key sites for mitigation infrastructure placement within the Bavispe protected area, as well as outside of it. This study case poses a unique opportunity to monitor wildlife before, during, and after highway construction.
