In a large part due to the success of the partnerships developed during the implementation of the SH 9 Project, CDOT and CPW have recognized the vital importance that strong collaboration between agencies and stakeholders has in delivering successful projects that benefit both wildlife and motorists. The unique challenges of addressing the intersection of wildlife habitat and migration needs with motorist conflict on our state highway system has led to the strong partnership between these two State agencies. This collaborative environment led to CDOT and CPW hosting the first Colorado Wildlife and Transportation Summit in 2017, and the subsequent creation of the Colorado Wildlife and Transportation Alliance. Since 2018, this multi-agency, multi-stakeholder group has helped Colorado focus its efforts on habitat connectivity and wildlife vehicle collision reduction initiatives. This presentation will focus on the efforts the Alliance has undertaken to support the priorities identified in the West Slope Wildlife Prioritization Study, engage and educate the public, conduct outreach initiatives, grant writing, and project partnering efforts. We will highlight the strong partnership Colorado has developed with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe on numerous initiatives and projects, as well as several successful partnering efforts on construction projects, the development of data acquisition and collaboration tools, and the creation of a statewide mitigation database.
