ICOET is the forum for practitioners and scientists in transportation ecology and related disciplines engaged in governmental, academic, nonprofit, and private sectors. ICOET presentations highlight project planning or implementation activities, research findings, emerging issues, or best practices related to the interface between transportation, other linear infrastructure types, communities, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

ICOET 2021 will be conducted virtually, due to the continuing impacts of COVID-19 around the world. These unprecedented circumstances, however, offer us an exciting opportunity to bring together colleagues from more nations than ever before, promising to make this year’s conference the most international ICOET yet! We formally invite you to join us and celebrate your recent endeavors in transportation ecology.

Abstract Submission Deadline – May 7, 2021

Professionals, academics and students are encouraged to submit abstracts and proposals for the following presentation formats. Your proposed presentation should align with the ICOET 2021 theme and topic areas posted at https://icoet.net/2021/theme. Please note that the virtual format and inclusion of global audiences means that each day of presentations will be shorter than usual. This means the available panels and workshops slots will be much more limited than in 2019. We still expect to have the same number of podium talks.

1. Podium – Podium presentations will be pre-recorded, 15-minute lectures organized in sessions according to themes. The recordings will be live-streamed at scheduled times and followed by a live, 30-minute moderated Q&A with attendees and group discussion featuring all presenters from the session. ICOET organizing staff with the University of California Davis will assist presenters with production of their recordings to ensure format consistency. Podium sessions may be organized and podium talks proposed as a group (see below). In this case, each podium abstract will be still be reviewed. 2. Multimedia – In lieu of our traditional Lightning Talks and Poster sessions, Multimedia presentations will be pre-recorded, 5-minute talks posted for on-demand viewing and convenient for all time zones during the conference dates. Multimedia presentations will be grouped by theme, and groups of presenters will be scheduled in live sessions for the opportunity to answer questions from attendees in a moderated discussion. Multimedia presenters are encouraged to be creative in their approach – feel free to go beyond slides and narration to include innovative ways to relay your work (e.g. videos, story maps). 3. Organized Session – Proposals for complete, 90-minute Panel Sessions or Organized Podium Sessions are invited. Your session should be organized around a central theme with presentations and discussion aligned with the conference theme and relevant topic areas. Your session proposal should describe your central theme; its various issues and perspectives to be addressed; a list of presenter names, their respective titles and organizations; and an outline of the session agenda. A) Panels: Panelists should represent multiple disciplines and varied professional perspectives on the theme. Presentations by each panelist will be pre-recorded and brief (approx. 5-minutes each) to orient the audience to the central theme. The recordings will be live-streamed at the session’s scheduled time and followed by a live, moderated panel discussion of approximately 45 minutes. Panelists will be asked to address questions from attendees submitted to the panel organizer in advance of the scheduled session as well as take questions live from the audience. B) Organized Podium: An organized session of podium talk includes 4 or 5 podium talks around a theme. The organizer submits a separate proposal for an organized technical session and must include a list of standard questions each presenter will address. 4. Workshop – Program space for 1 or 2 workshops, total, will be available for ICOET 2021. Creative proposals for 45 or 90-minute, interactive workshops are invited. Considering the limitations for engagement posed by a virtual format, your workshop proposal should be detailed in its description of instructional goals and methods. 5. Field Trip – The virtual platform provides a unique opportunity to take ICOET attendees to many project and research field sites around the globe. Creative and engaging field trip video proposals are invited. Virtual field trips will be pre-recorded and streamed live at a scheduled session time followed by a live, interactive and facilitated Q&A. The proposed video or live field-session should not exceed 60 minutes including the recorded presentation (~30 minutes) and time for Q&A. We especially look forward to abstract submissions from newcomers to ICOET, therefore we will only accept up to three (3) presentations from any one presenter, with the exception of Multimedia presentations.
